Leading ports across the world work together on reducing CO2 emissions of shipping and port activities and therefore on improving air quality too.
The port authorities of Antwerp, Barcelona, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Le Havre, Long Beach, Los Angeles, New York & New Jersey, Rotterdam, Valencia, Vancouver, and Yokohama have united in the World Ports Action Climate Program (WPCAP), which was formed in 2018 to work actively on realising the Paris Climate Agreement.
FIVE SPECIFIC ACTIONS
The World Ports Climate Action Program concentrates on the following five specific actions. In each of these, a WPCAP workgroup is active. The port organisations can make actual progress by sharing knowledge, developing projects together and involving the shipping sector in the process.
Efficiency
Smart digital solutions optimise the approach and handling of vessels in ports. Shorter turnaround times lead to fuel savings and emission reductions.
Shore-based power
Cooperation between member ports to accelerate the introduction of shore-based power for sea-going vessels. Emission reduction and improved air quality due to vessels using green electricity.
Cleaner fuels
Encouragement to use low-carbon and carbon-free fuels to reduce emissions in the maritime transport sector drastically.
Terminal equipment
Cooperation between port authorities with terminal operators for the introduction of new, emission-free storage and terminal equipment, such as container cranes.
Policy
Cooperation and exchange in fields such as incentive schemes to promote emission reductions in the maritime industry.
In each of these, a WPCAP workgroup is active. The port organisations can make actual progress by sharing knowledge, developing projects together and involving the shipping sector in the process.
The WPCAP programme has been drawn up for a five-year period. Workgroups are active throughout the year. A CEO meeting takes place twice a year, in which progress is discussed.
